Virginia used an 8-2 second half run to break open a tight contest and win the men's lacrosse national title with a 15-8 win over Massachusetts this afternoon before an NCAA championship record crowd of 47,062 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
The championship is Virginia's fourth NCAA championship and the sixth national title in program history. The Cavaliers become the first team in NCAA history to finish with a 17-0 record and the 12th team in NCAA history to win the national championship with an undefeated record.
At the end of the 2006 season the parents of the men's lacrosse team joined together and commissioned award winning artist Patrick Reid O'Brien to create a painting as a gift for coach Dom Starsia. The painting captured all the excitement of the perfect 2006 season. The championship flags at Klockner Stadium and the perfect 17-0 record are all subtly worked into the composition as a tribute to all Virginia Champions. The original painting is hanging in coach Starsia's office and a signed and numbered lithograph was presented to each of the players and staff. The art is being used as the back cover of the 2007 Virginia Men's lacrosse media guide.
